Topic 1: TCO comparison: Blades vs. Rack Server by Dale Abel
Blades, Rack Servers, Virtualization, Thin Clients, Virtual Storage, etc. We are all faced with technology tradeoff decisions on a regular basis.
This talk will focus on a comparison of Blade vs Rack Server technology and walk through how to compare two technologies, both inside and outside of the server room. Topics will include financial analysis, funding models, computer room constraints, risk profiles, and contractual considerations.
Dale Abel started back in the dark ages of technology as a VAX/VMS system administrator and interactive video based training programmer for Lockheed. In the 24+ years since then Dale has spent 10 years on Wall St. 4 years bouncing around the country consulting, 4 years with the US Antarctic Program, and 4 years back in the financial industry at TIAA-CREF. Dale has assumed a variety of titles from “Vice President, Client Server Engineering” on Wall St., to IT Architect with the USAP. Currently with TIAA-CREF he is a Sr. IT Engineer.
Topic 2: Windows memory tuning (32-bit) by Dale Abel
Poor performance in Windows, add memory – right? Not necessarily.
This talk will walk through a couple ways to determine if you have a memory constraint problem, some of the constructs that govern memory tuning in windows, and some of the boot file switches that effect the system operation – sometimes adversely.
This is an overview-level talk (101), so will touch on a couple of the memory-tuning dependencies, but not deep-dive into all of the memory tuning interdependencies and parameters that may need to be adjusted during a full tuning exercise. Remember the 80/20 rule.
Topic 3: Ask a Question
This is our time for anybody to ask a question. There's a good chance that another member present may have a solution.
